It is with great appreciation we can formally announce that Damien Foley has been confirmed as a speaker at the Yulkuum Jerrang- 3rd Indigenous Economic Development Conference in November 2011. This is the pinnacle event in the Indigenous Business calendar in Victoria and for some in Australia. The event is held once every two years, hosted by the Koori Business Network and the Dept of Business and Innovation, Victoria. The purpose of the conference is to allow Indigenous business people a chance to come and meet with like minded others and to promote the significance of business in the Indigenous community. The line up of speakers is an exceptional array of nationally and internationally recognised business people. it is sure to be a great event!” Damien’s contribution’s to Indigenous Business was recognised with his presentation as a guest speaker at the Aboriginal Enterprise in Mining Energy and Exploration (AEMEE) Conference in Perth October 2010.

There are several Gas Projects to start within the next year in Queensland. We have already been asked to start quoting for these projects in preparation for when the works begin. Refer below for a list of the machinery requested. We have a number of subcontractors but the demand for these projects is going to be extensive. The projects will be located in locations from the Surat Basin at Dalby and Chinchilla through to Mackay and Gladstone.

I have spoken with subcontractors who are telling me “Yeah I want to work on the project but call me when you have the work.” The problem with this is the major contractors are wanting to identify the availability of machinery now. So if you aren’t on their books for the planning stage, it is going to be difficult to get work later on. This has always been the case with major projects. Another issue subcontractors face is “its not what you know, its who you know”. Foley’s Earthmoving has already been contacted as an intended preferred supplier. As we provide Procurement Management Services, it is our role to source subcontractors, local preferred, for major contractors. By being able to locate a quantity of subcontractors we give small subcontractors the ability to work on major projects.

Major contractors prefer local subcontractors for projects. Many local subcontractors though are too small for them to deal with directly. This is why the Major contractors use Foley’s Earthmoving. We source the local subcontractors for them allowing them to contract to just one business that can supply multiple pieces of equipment. Our Subcontractors love this as we source the work on projects which allows them to not have to be concerned about working their machinery and trying to find the next lot of work. This is where we create a win-win situation for both the contractors and subcontractors.

If you would like to become a subcontractor to Foley’s Earthmoving go to our Subcontractors Page. If you would like to find out more about becoming a subcontractor with Foley’s Earthmoving then call Damien Foley on 0437 028 006.

To try and keep you up to date with events in Queensland on the work front, I want to send this newsletter giving you some information on what has been happening. Please feel free to pass this onto anyone you know who is interested in work in Queensland.

Flood Recovery Work
This has been a slow process of finding out information as the pipeline of work is subject to the release of funds by the various levels of government. What I can tell you is that I am starting to see advertisements coming through for Tenders and EOI’s. These all basically have the close date as the end of March. This is indicating that works will begin not too long after. As these are only just starting to come through the exact location of works and work type is still vague, but road works are the most obvious.

Major Projects
Queensland is also in the process of starting to commence major projects. These are going to be based out at Dalby/Chinchilla and run through to Gladstone in terms of pipes etc. But these will be all through the Darling Downs and along the eastern seaboard. This does not include mining projects. Early indications are that these are beginning later this year.

Competition for Projects
The amount of work to occur in Queensland is going to attract a lot of interest from interstate subcontractors. Where you locate yourself is going to be very important to the work you will be doing, the ability to secure work and the rate that can be charged. As a Subcontractor Management Service, our preference is to source subcontractors local to the region where the work is taking place.

The South East Queensland area is very attractive for its location in and around Brisbane. While there will be works in and around Brisbane, there is higher competition for this work. As you understand, pre existing relationships and other factors will decide who will get these jobs. Keep in mind locations such as Toowoomba is between Dalby and Ipswich. Dalby has gas projects and the Toowoomba and Ipswich areas have been heavily affected by floods. You may also have opportunities for having acreage for parking of equipment.

Housing and Location
As previously indicated in the Flood Recovery Work, those coming from interstate, as I previously advised, I suggest you start preparing yourself to come to Queensland to start identifying where you will want to base yourself. I foresee that there is going to be an influx from interstate which will make rental accommodation difficult to source. You also need to take into consideration that you may need to park your equipment up between projects.

Please also be aware that Queensland has rules around rental inspections which requires you to actually inspect the premises before you can apply, so make enquiries with real estate agencies about these rules.

Subcontracting to Foley’s Earthmoving
As previously discussed with you, as a subcontractor management service, we cannot guarantee you work. Likewise, we cannot put your business down as a supplier for projects until we know you are based in Queensland. This is why I have suggested you come and do a visit to Queensland before locating here. Upon your residency in Queensland please advise this so I can then start to identify work for your business.

Secondly, please ensure you have provided ALL the necessary information as requested on our website. This is just the basic information I need before I can even begin considering your business to subcontract. Be aware that I may ask for more information as the projects require. If you are unsure about the information you have sent, review our Subcontractors page on our website. I have made updates to assist subcontractors with information so please review and send me the required information. Also note that your Certificates of Currency for insurance must be current. Please do not send out of date certificates of currency. Please contact your Insurance provider and request a Certificate of Currency to be emailed to you to ensure it is the most current one.

National Code of Practice Compliance- This is a document that is very relevant to government projects. I suggest you attain this to give yourself the best chance of work. It has now been updated for 2009 and identifies a particular project. I suggest for now you put Queensland Flood Recovery as the project.

Subcontractors Page

Employment Opportunities
I have been asked about employment opportunities in the area. Again, be aware that there is going to be a large influx of workers to Queensland. We will also start to see a large influx of overseas labour. I am expecting Ireland to be a large supplier of labour and competition in this area due to their poor economy and the 457 Visa rules introduced by the Australian Government. Be aware that Queensland has requirements around the operation of equipment where tickets are required for the operation of machinery. For these please check our website

Employment Page

Did you Find this Helpful?
Can you please provide some feedback on this newsletter. If you require other general information that is relevant to subcontractors please let me know so I can issue more frequent newsletters to keep you informed.

The devastation caused by the Queensland floods are going to require massive clean up and construction to be undertaken to return the flood affected areas back to normal. As a part of this, Foley’s Earthmoving has been asked to provide a list of earthmoving and construction equipment all over South East Queensland to the State Government Department that will be involved in the process.
Due to the immense level of work to be undertaken by the departments, they are not currently seeking expressions of interest at this time from contractors as they are more concerned with the relief work for those affected. But in contacting the departments last week prior to the floods in Ipswich and Brisbane, Foley’s Earthmoving has been asked directly to provide a list of equipment it can supply as part of the works to be carried out after the flood recedes. From what the department has informed us, after the flood water recedes, the affected areas assessed and priority works identified, we will be required to move in ready to undertake works.
For this reason Foley’s Earthmoving is requesting all earthmoving subcontractors to provide details of their equipment that is available all over South East Queensland, including areas as Dalby, Chinchilla, Toowoomba, Lockyer Valley, Ipswich, Brisbane, Warwick and the Sunchine Coast. it is expected that work will commence as early as the weekend as the waters begin to recede and the clean up work begins.
If you are an earthmoving contractor or know of any earthmoving contractors, please go to our ‘Subcontractors’ page and email us the information required to allow us to list your equipment.

Foley’s Earthmoving was invited to attend the Logan City Sustainability Roundtable on the 9th November 2009. Representing Foley’s Earthmoving, Damien Foley attended the workshop in the area of small business. The representation of the community was very diverse, with roundtables consisting of Social/Community, Business/Economic, Governance/Political, Rural and Natural Landscapes. Tim Winton of ‘Permaforest Trust’ opened the moring with an informative presentation on global sustainability and its relationship to the local community.

The workshop then proceeded into the first of the 2 sections of the workshop. Seated at the Business and Economic table, the first of the workshop questions presented to each table was focused on Logans current key issues, challenges, threats and opportunities and how Logan might look like in 10-20 years time if it addressed these threats and opportunities. Some of the key issues identifed by all the tables was Logans transport infrastructure and its current lack of ability to service the areas decentralised communities. Logans current image was also a concern as an attraction for industry with its location being unwelcoming to prospective employees of such industry. The lack of building of relationships between the Logan City Council and small local business was also an area found to be lacking. This relationship not only being needed to encourage micro business in the area, but to encourage them to grow and become major corporate citizens and pillars of the area.

The second workshop area was how the respective sectors were already contributing to positive and sustainable activity, what there current focus was to acheive their aspiring contributions, past changes and motivational success factors, what was blocking innovation, and what is needed to move forward. This section being so vast did become distorted but included aspects such as fuel effeciency; the use of environmentally friendly practices; the recognition of the community; environmental sustainability as both a business motivator and innovation success factor; youth and business educational programs around business and the community. A disappointing fact that arose from this discussion is the Logan City Council has a local business register. However, the ultimate decision of who is contracted for local government projects is left with the manager of the department who is under no obligation to consider those local businesses who have registered through the protocoled channels. Instead, that person has the authority to contract any business they wish without council scrutiny. It leaves to question the Logan City Councils commitment to support local business, when they themselves heavily desire local business to support the Councils community actions.

Foley’s Earthmoving looks forward to the releasing of the white paper on this roundtable and believes that it is a valuable step forward in understanding the Logan Citys approach to sustainable development to the future.

Firstly, we apologise for not updating this sooner. As previously announced, Damien Foley was becoming a mentor for a Young Achievement Australia Program high school team. Damien, due to his previous experience in the program was then contacted by the YAA State Manager, Jenni Chew, to become a mentor for a University of Queensland YAA Team as the team had not been allocated any mentor. As Marsden State High School already had a mentor, Damien was happy to take on this new role.

The UQ team is named Siddhya, being Sanscrit for “Success”. After considering many different products that they could do, the team decided to do ”Business and Student Seminars” as their product, or should I say service. The team has undergone some immense pressures, but have come out completing their first business seminar on “Market Positioning”, with Wayne Rabnott of Clarity Business Solutions as the guest speaker. The night was a huge success!!

The Team also attended the South East Queensland Trade Expo at Southbank and attained a Highly Commended in Product Knowledge. They have learnt event management skills; attended local Chambers Of Commerce and Rotary Meetings to promote and sell for these events; Applied marketing skills for creating fliers; utilised technology to comunicate and gain market information; learnt how to prepare sales speals; build business relationships; work as a team. This is just some of what the team has learnt from being a part of the YAA Program.

I am looking forward to the teams next seminar being an interactive workshop for students on communication skills and interviewing techniques in the business place.

YAA Young Achievement Australia Mentor Marsden State High School Pakkyah 2009.

Foley’s Earthmoving is proud to be associated with Young Achievement Australia by becoming a mentor for Marsden State High School’s team “Pakkyah”. Young Achievement Australia is a Not For Profit charitable institution that is committed to developing the boundless potential of young Australians through the YAA Program.

The program allows students from high school and universities to setup a business, sell shares, create management positions for students and make a product and sell it to customers. At the end of the year the company is liquidated with any profits made distributed back to shareholders. The students take on the everyday challenges faced by business. As a result they develop their leadership, team work, innovation and entrepreneurial skills to take with them into life after school.

Damien Foley is proud to be accepted by YAA to mentor Pakkyah with their teacher Odette Cheal through the program. This will be Marsden State High Schools first year in the program, so the team is equally nervous and excited in taking on the challenge. We will keep you posted on the groups achievements through out the program.

If you would like to know more about becoming involved with the YAA program, go to our “Links” page and follow the ”Young Achievement Australia” hyperlink.

Thanks,

Damien Foley
